Training

The IBEW Local 143 uses a nationally recognized program started in the 1940’s by a “joint” venture between labor and management known as the National Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.  This group understood the importance of apprenticeship training to the electrical industry and wanted to create a standardized means of implementation.

The national program is the template by which each local union provides a classroom education combined with on-the-job training.  This ensures that successful candidates will have the skills, knowledge and attitude to be productive and safe craftsmen for today’s electrical construction industry.

What exactly can be expected of someone who enters into our local unions apprenticeship program?  Our Journeyman Wireman program is a five year program and consists of 900 hours of classroom instruction and 8000 hours of on-the-job training.  Our Sound and Communications program is a three year program and consists of 540 hours of classroom instruction and 6000 hours of on-the-job-training.  Both of these apprenticeships are earn as you learn and your pay advances with your gained knowledge and experience.

These programs emphasize the theory behind the work as well as practical and safety related topics.  Because of this, there is a need for knowledge of Algebra in order to qualify for either program.  And because of the comprehensive nature of the programs, they are nationally recognized in IBEW locals throughout the United States.
